New York Man Jailed for Disability Fraud
Posted on Jun 05, 2013
We all know that there are people who collect Social Security disability based on dubious medical evidence—many of whom continue to hold part-time or even full-time jobs, even as they collect benefits from the government. But what happens if an individual is caught in the act of perpetrating a massive fraud on the government?
According to SILive.com, the feds recently caught up with a 60-year-old Staten Island, NY resident who scammed the Social Security system for over a dozen years. According to his lawyer, Carl Bravata seriously injured his lower legs while working for the New York sanitation department, and retired on Social Security disability in 1992. A few years later, his daughter moved back home with him, accompanied by her two young children, and that's when Bravata decided to go back to work for a Staten Island electrical company, even while he continued to collect disability benefits for his “serious” knee and ankle injuries.
The upshot: Bravata has been sentenced to three months in jail, and also must pay the government $234,000 in restitution. After his release, Bravata will also be subject to three years of supervision by the feds—at the end of which he may be eligible to receive Social Security retirement benefits!
